Floyd Schmoe (1985-2001)

There might be a lot of Japanese who do not know the name because elders don’t even know him nowadays. Hiroshima citizens living near houses which he built know what he done for Hiroshima City after World War II.

The slogan of “Houses For Hiroshima” Project

Floyd Schmoe is an American who supported Hiroshima citizens after World War II. After he saw a tragedy of Hiroshima, he and his friends visited Hiroshima City and then launched a project called “Houses for Hiroshima” to build houses for people who lost their houses in 1949.

Floyd Schmoe raised donations in United States and came to Hiroshima to build houses back and forth.

First, he, his friends and volunteers built many houses in Minami-cho.

And then they built houses in Eba-cho.

Most of houses they built were rebuilt because the houses were built long time ago. This house has been preserved by Hiroshima City called “Shmoe House” and is used as a community center now.

Before, houses except Schmoe House did not have bath room, so people came to this house to take a bath.

There were not so many exhibitions. But there is a caretaker who can explains the details about Floyd Shmoe.

Floyd Schmoe died at 105 years old in 2001. A caretaker said that the person who did good things to others can live long. Now, we are facing a serious COVID-19 issue, we need to help each other to survive.
