Hi everyone, Tsumutake is here. Now, my hometown, Hiroshima City announced a state of emergency due to the surge of variants. Thus I’m writing this blog at home. Hope we can return to normal life soon.
Today, currently guys is 4:00 p.m. Japan time. Today, I would like to explain how to improve a bit dark photo. Here is a photo from my friend. It’s a beautiful shot but the whole image looks a bit dark. Do you have an experience to take a photo which is somewhat dark or gloomy?

Let us overlook the photo. Her back, the shadow area is very dark. How do we improve it? It is easy.

Let us increase the brightness of the shadow area. SHADOW function can increase the brightness level in dark area.

I increased the slider of SHADOW function until her back can be seen clearly.
The brightness level at her back became brighter and the whole photo look brighter.

Let us compare them. The shadow area became brighter.

The dark area can be seen clearly. However, the photo became a bit soft. If you would like to add a contrast, use CONTRAST or STRUCTURE.

STRUCTURE function can lower the brightness of dark area such as shadow between hair strands

Her back side can be seen clearly compared to the original photo. But, the photo is still a bit dark. So I increased brightness and color a little bit using BRIGHTNESS and SATURATION. It is easy.

Let us compare the final result with the original one.

If you have such a photo which has a dark area such as shadow, you can improve it using SHADOW function. Once you resolve the issue, you can make your favorite photo. But. basically, before you taking photos, it is better to take a photo in a bright place while checking the shadow 😀
Have a great new week! See you
