Hi guys, Tsumutake is here. How are you doing? Recently, public facilities in my city had been closed due to the surge in COVID-19 new cases. The virus appeared at grocery stores near my house. I am a bit scared by invisible enemies. Hope you, your family members, and your friends stay safe!

Today, I continue to improve the different type of hair. I will try to improve the quality of black hair. The black level adjustment is simple but very deep because the range of the black hair is very limited, and the darkest area can not be seen clearly. Please see the photo below.

黒髪の調整はシンプルですが、とても奥深いです。以下の黒(明るさ0%)から白(明るさ100%)へ遷移する画像をご覧下さい。黒髪はこの狭いレンジの中で細かい濃淡を表現する必要が有ります。そもそも暗くて見えにくいのです。

EXAMPLE 3 : Black Hair

I took a photo of stylist’s black hair using iPhone11. But, the darkest area can not be seen clearly. In reality, I could see the details. It was the same result as that in the previous blog. This photo on iPhone11 has a bit strong contrast. The darkest area stuck to the black.

スタイリストさんの黒髪をiPhone 11で撮りました。この写真も同様、現実では見えていた耳の周辺の暗い部分がつぶれてデータも黒に張り付いていて詳細は見えません。iPhone 11はコントラストが強めです。

First, I will increase the brightness level of the dark area using SHADOW function like I did in the previous blog.

最初に前回のブログと同様に暗い部分をシャドウを使って暗部がもう少し見えるようにトライしてみます。

The brightness level in the dark area around stylist’s ear became brighter. The details in the darkest area can be seen slightly.

耳の周りの暗い部分がやや見えるようになり、現実の世界では見えていた暗い部分が改善しました。

Second, I will show you the easiest way to show the detail while keeping the balance of the photo. I will use BRIGHTNESS function to fine-tune.

次に、暗部を写真のバランスを変えずに調整する簡単な方法を説明します。ブライトネスを使います。

I showed two ways of boosting up the brightness in the dark area. The first method is to increase the brightness of dark area only. The other method is to increase the brightness of all areas. The second way is to increase the data at the same ratio so the balance of the brightness in the photo can be kept. People think the result is just a bit brighter one. If you prefer the strong contrast image, you need to do nothing!

ここまで2種類の方法を紹介しました。１つめは暗い部分のみの明るさを上げる方法、２つ目は全体の明るさを上げる方法です。2つ目のブライトネスを使った方法はすべての部分の明るさを一律に上昇させます。黒髪その他の部分の明るさのバランスも崩れずに、自然にやや明るくなった程度に感じるかと思います。もし多少黒がつぶれても強いコントラストが好きでしたら特に何もする必要はないと思います。

BEFORE TAKING A BLACK HAIR PHOTO

If you would like to show the details of the black hair or objects in the dark area, it is better to take the photo in the bright place or change the exposure on your camera/smartphone to get a bright photo. The reason is that once the data stuck to zero(true black), the details can not appear again.

もしあなたが黒髪の暗部の細かい部分を見せたい場合は、明るい場所で撮影するか、露出という機能で撮影時に少し明る目に撮影することをお勧めします。理由は写真を撮って一旦真っ黒になったデータでは細部は二度と現れないからです。

TRUE BLACK(100% BLACK) DOES NOT EXIST EXCEPT A BLACK HOLE

Black hole can show you the true black in this word. It can absorb all light. But, 99.99% black exists in this world. Please refer to Vantablack. It can realize a high contrast on your hair! lol

世の中で、ブラックホール以外に真っ黒の物質は存在しません。ブラックホールは光も全て吸い込みます。99.99%光を吸収する物質はベンタブラックを参照下さい。私が美容師でしたらこのような真っ黒を使用しますね(笑)

BLACK IS DIFFERENT FROM DEVICE TO DEVICE

First, I fine-tuned the stylist’s black hair on my iPhone 11 and confirmed that the details can be seen. And then I checked the photo on my laptop, so the darkest area still can not see clearly. Because the black level varies from display to display, from device to device. Once you improved the black hair on your device and then check it and confirm some improvement on another device, I recommend you not to fine-tuning the details for a long time.

今回、黒髪の調整をiPhone11でやりましたが、この写真を私のノートPCで見ると、細部がまだ暗いです。見え方がちがいます。理由は黒の表現はディスプレイやデバイス(pc, スマホ,テレビ,etc)によって異なるからです。複数のデバイスで確認する場合、ある程度納得できるものができればそこで微調整はやめた方がいいです。

SUMMARY

You can fine-tune black hair using basic functions. But, if you would like to fine-tune the black level more, the basic functions can not do it. The adjustment is simple but deep. Please use Photoshop or Affinity Photo and the other professional tools. Enjoy editing your photo!
