Adjust Contrast

STEP 4. Make Your Photo Clearer

First, let us consider what a clear image is.

When we see the big difference of brightness between images, we see them clearly.

It is a clear image

In contrast, we see soft image if there is not much difference of brightness between images.

It is a soft image

We say that the photo has contrast if the photo has big difference level of brightness. Please see photos below.

BABY ROCKS! The photo on the right side has strong contrast
Big Buddha statue in Takaoka, Japan. On the left is the original photo.

This is an example of clear and soft image. The one on the right side has strong contrast. You see sharp edge. While the one on the right photo has low contrast. So you can see soft image.

Let’s finish brightness adjustment using CONTRAST function. Now, I finished adjusting black level in previous chapter.

CONTRAST function can make your photo high contrast if you increase CONTRAST. (Usually, user use this way, so I do not explain if you decrease CONTRAST. I will explain that in my blog. )

I increased CONTRAST up to 50.

You can compare the difference.

The photo on the right has contrast and is clearer.

You can see the difference clearly. The CONTRAST function makes dark area darker and brightness area brighter. As a result, there are big differences of brightness and the photo have a contrast.
