STEP 2. Keep The Details Of Highlight 

In the brightest area, it already have enough brightness. e.g. light sources, objects near light sources or reflection.

Basically, you need to keep the details while increasing or decreasing the brightness for bright area only. In Instagram apps, HIGHLIGHTS function can do that.

Now, the brighter one I edited lost the details of the brightest area. Let’s compare the difference.

In this photo, the brightest area which is around the clouds is too bright. So I will decrease the brightness of that part using HIGHLIGHTS function until the details appear again.

If the details do not appear again, decrease the BRIGHTNESS function until the details clearly appear again.

The photo I decreased brightness in bright area using HIGHLIGHTS function shows the detail of clouds but it became dark.

Let us compare the photo I edited this Chapter with original one.

The photo I edited in this chapter is darker than the one I edited in previous chapter. But it is brighter than the original photo and keeps most of the details.

The Goal To Adjust Highlight Is To Keep The Details Of The Photo

I explained that we need to get enough brightness of what we want to improve as much as we can. In this study, the girl is what I want to improve. But the girl’s face becomes dark. If you do not care the details of highlight, you can not decrease highlight. I am showing conventional way of editing your photo. I will explain it further in my blog.
